Description
Yew Tree Farm is still a rare example of a farm with a surviving spinning gallery (situated just in front of the old barn) where it was used for drying rather than spinning the wool of robust Herdwick sheep. Alfred paints a classic viewpoint here, which shows all of its quaint characteristics and yet highlights the severe simplicities provided for farm workers at the time. Perhaps it is now one of Lakeland's most sketched, painted, photographed and filmed places, due to its associations with a certain Mrs Heelis (Beatrix Potter).
"The tree from which Yew Tree Farm is named was calculated to have been 700 years old when it was blown down in a storm in 1896. Souvenir hunters took most of it, but parts of its ancient trunk are still lying about"
