Description
"From Tarn Hows, a place of populous resort, the great frame of the view is into Langdale; if you leave Tarn Hows by Tom Ghyll - towards the Yewdale road- you will have the Langdale Pikes framed to your complete and perfect satisfaction in the 'jaws' at the stream head" [Walking in the Lake District - H. H. Symonds, p248]
Tarn Hows (which apparently means 'small heights surrounding the lake') was artificially enlarged by a dam in the early 20th century, and planted with spruce and larch, some twenty years before Alfred painted this enduring Autumnal picture.
