Description

Here William presents a long commanding view down towards the lake, with the Skiddaw massif soaring up into the lofty heights on the right-handside, while a handful of conifer trees hug the lower reaches of the Lorton Fells on the left, as the marshy contours of the pale green valley - painted in diminishing tones, roll down to the shore.

"It was just over the hill from here, at Embleton, that the famous sword now in the British Museum was found, an iron blade in a bronze sheath, with red and green jewels on the hilt - the Excalibur of some ancient Briton not without wealth and art"

(The Lake Counties - W. G. Collingwood, p152)
