A Farmstead in Grasmere - Original Painting by William Heaton Cooper R.I. (1903 - 1995)

Description

A quiet agricultural scene at Town Head Farm, still a working farm today. Painted in 1926, this piece is a rarer example of William’s earlier work, before the success of his first book, ‘Hills of Lakeland’.

The farmer, Jim Riley, and animals in the foreground are constructed using loose strokes, giving the painting movement. Smoke from the chimney billows up and blends deftly into the sky, with Helm Crag and Gibson Knott anchoring this  scene in place in the Lake District with earthy greens and sepias.
