Description

This wonderfully atmospheric watercolour, painted perhaps in the early 20th century, shows a couple of fishermen with their coble, a traditional, flat-bottomed clinker-built fishing boat, discussing the prospects of laying lobster pots on a bright morning off Marsden Rocks, which lie east of South Shields.

Cobles are still used in the North-East today, though they generally now have diesel engines in place of their original lug sails.

Set within a deep black beveled frame.
