Thirlmere from Dunmail Raise - Original Painting by Alfred Heaton Cooper (1863 - 1929)

Sale price£4,900.00

The huge stone cairn depicted in the foreground of this atmospheric painting by Alfred is still to be found on Dunmail Raise, the pass that divides the Vale of Grasmere from the Thirlmere valley to its north.

According to legend, the cairn covers the bones and crown of the last King of Cumbria, Dunmail, who was defeated in battle here over a thousand years ago; though history records he actually died on a pilgrimage to Rome.

The smoke from bracken-burning fires, visible on the slopes of Steel Fell behind the cairn, is matched by the pink and orange sunset-swirls of cloud Alfred has painted floating dramatically over Skiddaw in the distance.

Set within a tasteful gold frame.
