Description

Nestled under the slopes of Lingmoor Fell, Birk How is one of a small group of surviving traditional Lake District farmhouses, known as ‘longhouses’, where farm animals were stalled in a byre in line with the accommodation for the family. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in the Lake District, cattle were increasingly given their own byres, separate from many farmhouses.

William’s painting contrasts the summer-bright, whitewashed farmhouse walls with the rich greens of the fields. The sharp angular roofs of the grey drystone barn in the middle of the painting naturally draw our eyes upwards to the steep slopes of Lingmoor Fell in the background.

Set within a subtle walnut frame.
