The tall proud figure of a woman, her long limbs full of strength and dignity, strides forward into the sea, her arm half-protecting, half propelling her young son forward into the water. Is 'The Wave' a metaphor for every woman's ambivalence as her children launch into their independent lives, striking the balance between the desire to protect and yet also to promote, to nurture and yet to expose to new experiences?
Ophelia produced this sculpture in the 1930's, modelling first in clay, then cold casting in bronze.
